Break Free: Overcoming Trauma, Addiction, and Pharmaceutical Dependency

Dawn A. Kirby is an independent author from Memphis, Tennessee who aspires to help trauma survivors, change the way mental health problems are treated, and make the world a better place through her writing. After fighting through a challenging, unique first quarter of her life, she wrote her first memoir Break Free: Overcoming Trauma, Addiction, and Pharmaceutical Dependency. We have conducted an interview with her.

What exactly inspires you in writing a memoir "Break Free: Overcoming Trauma, Addiction, and Pharmaceutical Dependency"?
The desire to help others who are suffering from the devastating effects of trauma is my main inspiration for writing.

Which are the flaws in the conventional mental health treatment?
I think a big problem with conventional mental health treatment is that doctors are often very quick to diagnose mental illnesses and prescribe potentially dangerous psychiatric drugs.

How long did you take to write this first book?
About three years.

Are you planning to write a sequel?
I definitely plan to continue writing but I'm not sure what I will write later in life. So much can happen in just a few years, so another memoir may be in my future.

What are your aspirations?
I want to empower trauma survivors, change the way mental health problems are treated, and make the world a better place through my writing.

What is the key message you would like to extend to trauma survivors through your writing?
Always trust your intuition, even if it goes against what others have told you.
